These Pneumatic Released clutches or brakes are engaged when the air pressure is not present. This means if the air pressure remains off, then the unit will remain on. Moreover, a set of friction discs are squeezed together by allowing the brake or clutch to hold or transmit the torque. When the air is supplied to the piston then the unit is disengaged. Then the piston forces the pressure plate against that of springs by removing the spring force from that of friction discs. This disc does not spin in free motion without the ability to hold or transmit torque.
